How To Get the Most Out of This Book

Welcome and Thank You

The Stories From My Grandmothers Hands is for ages 3-8. This is an invitation for all caregivers of all bodies and identities in our communities to read to our children.

Listen to the accompanying album by yourself, in sections or in its entirety. Then listen to it again with the shorter tracks as you read the book. Notice what you experience. Only after that should you read to the younger bodies. This helps your body become conditioned before your engagement. Don’t skip this step.

Children respond to what their caregivers’ bodies recoil from and lean into. This must be inquired into, by you first.

Experience the importance of playing with the book and music before reading with children, which will aid in:

  • Understanding the importance of grounding.
  • Understanding how to use the children’s tracks and the longer tracks.
  • Help you be more present while you read.
  • Help you engage the stories that emerge from you as you read and listen to the music.
  • Help create a more embodied sense of safety.

Sign up for an upcoming 90-minute online workshop with Dr. Resmaa Menakem and T. Mychael Rambo to learn how to use the book and album with more depth.

This book is a loving invitation to ALL bodies and identities to read to children and build strong liberatory bonds. For example, if you are in a visibly melanated body and have a particular identity, it is so important that children see that identity and body reading… and reading to them. In all of your beauty. It also helps bodies of different ableness and identities understand that they aren’t defective in the world.

If you feel so inclined, record and film yourself reading the book and listening to the music; then share that with others. Please use these hashtags with your videos so they can be easily found on social media and the internet.
